When we decided to call ourselves The Big Bloomers Company, we hadn't intended to make bloomers! It just seemed a good name for a company whose purpose was to provide big knickers for big women. It soon became apparent though, that we were attracting many visitors to our website simply because they were looking to buy bloomers. We received one or two disgruntled emails from people who had crawled all over our site trying to find bloomers and several more from people asking us why we weren't selling bloomers and lots of more from people beseeching us to start manufacturing big old fashioned bloomers like grandma used to wear. So, here they are folks, lovely, big, comfortable old fashioned bloomers, made from 100% soft combed cotton - just like grandma would have worn. Enjoy.
These plus size 100% combed cotton bloomers are made by The Big Bloomers Company who specialise in very large sized knickers and clothing for men and women. The bloomers are made here in England, from a soft, jersey cotton which is soft, caressing and gentle. They are designed to the old fashioned bloomers design that great-grandma wore with copious amounts of material gathered into the waist and at the legs. The bloomers are generously sized and are guaranteed to keep the thighs and buttocks warm during winter months.
Feedback from customers suggests that the bloomers are not suitable to wear under trousers because there's too much material in them - see our long legged knickers if that's what you are looking for.
As you can see from our model Sylvia who is wearing the bloomers the material is gathered with elastic at the legs and the leg length is designed so that they fall below the knee.
Here's an amusing story from one of our customers. Mavis Downer grew up in the Black Country during the war. She attended the local infants school where the headmistress (a maiden lady) insisted on drill outside in the playground every morning whatever the weather.....
Back then, there were many poor families and several of the five year olds were quite inadequately clothed to be standing outside on a bitter cold January morning, I can remember. Anyway, there we all were in class rows with our class teacher standing at the back of the row to keep an eye on us. The headmistress would have us all breath in and out 'big breaths children, get the air into your lungs' she used to shout, and there we all were shivering with cold, breathing in and exhaling frosty air for what seemed like ages. Then, we all had to take out and hankies and wave them in the air.....and woe betide you if you'd forgotten your hankie. The poor teachers were instructed to travel up and down their row to make sure that each pupil was waving a handkerchief. When it was established that each pupil was equipped, the headmistress used to lift her skirt up as high as the bottom of her bloomers and bring out her own crisp white lace edged hankie. She then proceeded to blow her nose and we children (and the teachers as well) all had to do the same. Having blown her nose, the headmistress would ball up her hankie, bend down, lift her skirt and tuck the lacey piece of cotton back into her bloomer leg.
